Bruise and Dishonour – Sunday Tribune

Cléa van der Grijn displays an impressive grasp of texture. The cross shape – a motif that runs throughout- made up of small numbered panels. She uses gritty surfaces, rough impasto, gold and plaster-like white to produce a work that both posits and undercuts a highly charged symbol. Symbol and materials reinforce a range of associations but the matter-of-fact presentation, the numbering – an essential part of the piece – insist on the plain physical presence of the panels.
